Something by Shelby Lamb

4 Stars.

So this was an unexpected pick and I am glad that I picked it up. It was a good solid read and I really love the cover!

So the book follows Aubrey as sort of our main character. Aubrey's boyfriend, Nathan, has broken up with her and she is feeling completely alone, suicidal and hates everyone. Aubrey comes across a book called 'Something' which now has her and others linked to a terrible curse. The book also follows the lives of her now ex-boyfriend who is dating her best friend, an amateur porn star, Bella; and a friend she met online, Kendra, who is expecting twins any day now. The story delves deeply into their lives and how something deep and scary is lurking in the shadows, waiting to take each of them.

I say Aubrey is our sort of main character as the book does delve into our other characters lives rather deeply and so I suppose they could all be seen as main characters in part. As I read the first 40% of the book, I did have to remind myself of what the book was about as there is a lot of back story and pieces about each of their lives in the lead up to the curse. Not that this is a bad thing, this does actually work with the story as a whole but some people might start wondering where the creepiness will began - please keep going, you won't be disappointed. The writing throughout the book I felt was fast paced and had a real flow to it. I would say that it took a lot of hard work to get this story up to such a high standard of writing; some more well known type books aren't always that good.

As for the characters, I would say that I neither loved nor hated any of them. They worked as a story but I did find myself rolling my eyes a little here and there with Aubrey; she definitely needed to get over herself. I do see why she was the way she was in the story though. The story is very explicit and there are numerous sexual references throughout so just a warning there. I certainly wasn't expecting that, but I really don't mind books which are explicit, sometimes it can be a little underwhelming in books which are really tight on the personal side! The elements of creepiness and the curse also really worked and I enjoyed reading those parts of the books; the descriptions were excellent.

Overall, this is a great start to a series I will hopefully keep my eyes out for. I would say it is a very unexpected read; but in a good way!

Happy reading :)
